Having a newborn can be a tad bit daunting especially for new parents. In the beginning, not many people know how to bond with their baby when all they seem to do is just sleep, feed and cry. So how does one interact and bond with such a young baby?

According to psychologist Siew Ju Li, parents can bond with their baby by initiating face to face contact, making eye contact, talking to the baby, smiling and responding to the coos and smiles of the infant. Parents should also respond warmly to the baby when the baby shows signs of distress or discomfort, such as when the baby cries or need a diaper change.

In fact, a great deal of bonding happens during feeding time in the early days. Touching, cuddling and holding an infant is a great way to start that bond. The baby will develop a sense of security and that in return this will prepare the baby to develop many foundations for their cognitive skills.

Babies are naturally attracted to faces, colors
and geometrical shapes, they are also constantly looking out for stimulation. So when mom or dad needs to leave baby alone for a short while to get some house chores done, Ju Li mentions that it is possible for babies to explore using their sight, hearing, touch, and smell independently.

Stimulating toys such as the Lamaze Gardenbug Foot Finder and Wrist Rattle Set can be safely wrapped
on baby’s wrist and slipped on baby’s feet to encourage discovery and awareness of baby’s own extremities. The enchanting rattles, contrasting patterns and bright colors stimulate vision, interaction and discovery as babies kick and reach, which will also awaken their muscles.

Beware of imitations and toys that do not meet the baby safety guide.

For older babies, Lamaze’s Freddie The Firefly- a friendly bug with soft velour body and lots of bright colors, patterns and textures is a great option to stimulate all senses. His layered wings include a peek-a-boo mirror for interactive play and multiple textures, shapes and crinkles that encourage baby to explore. Filled with features; Freddie has a squeaker, clinking rings, tethered ladybug teether and knotted antennae perfect for chewing. What’s even greater is that the Lamaze clip lets you hook Freddie to strollers, carriers and diaper bags to take him along for on-the-go fun.
